When you are 6 foot 2 and look like a movie star, people listen.
When you can back up what you are saying with results, people follow.
When you love like Jesus, regardless of color, caste or creed, people believe.
That’s what mama did.
She pushed the boundaries and crashed through the glass ceiling like it was tissue paper. When the men were hemming and hawing about how to make it work, she was already on the plane, headed for Istanbul, Mumbai, and Johannesburg. She took her skills and her talents straight to the people who needed them most. She sat for hour upon hour mentoring men and women how to better their lives.
She reversed trends.
She spoke.
She sang.
She told jokes.
She used herself as an example, because she was the example.
And along the way she gave back. She supported orphanages. She built hospital wings. She flung herself across the color barriers, the social barriers and the caste system. The more her heart broke, the more she gave. When the children begged in Manila, she was there. When the women cried out in Bangalore, she shared. When the men sought her expertise in Ankara and Pretoria, she patiently taught.
That’s what mama did.
Now she prays down heaven on women who have been sold or given up by their families into slavery here in America. She networks, connects, implores and leads those who want to help but don’t know what to do. She stops other grandmothers in stores to tell them the dangers of letting their granddaughters go to the mall alone. She tackles the tough issues like slavery and pornography.
She tells everyone she knows, what she knows, so that no one can say they didn’t know.
That’s what mama does.
P.S. Did I mention she adopted ME?
